This Combined Bachelor's and Master's (CBM) is a four-year accelerated program for those with an ATAR of 90 or above. Over the first three years you鈥檒l complete an extended major in Biochemistry of Nutrition, and some units from the Master of Biomedical Science. You can then choose to exit after three years with an Advanced Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Sciences, or continue with the Master of Biomedical Science and be awarded a Bachelor of Molecular Sciences and a Master of Biomedical Science at the end of the four years.
Nutritional biochemistry takes a scientific approach to nutrition. It focuses on nutrient chemical components, and how they function metabolically, physiologically, biochemically as well as their impact on disease.
Course structure
In your first three years, you will complete the Biochemistry of Nutrition (extended major) and a semester of postgraduate study. You will then complete your selected specialisation in the Master of Biomedical Science.
Why study this course?
You鈥檒l develop your understanding of the evidence behind the association of nutrition, exercise and the most predominant lifestyle diseases (diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, osteoporosis, and cancer)
This major focuses on nutrition at a molecular level and gives you a deeper understanding of the molecular processes related to nutrition
This major focuses on combining your academic studies with developing your hands-on skills in laboratories which will prepare you for work in industry or research
You'll learn to
develop biochemical and nutrition knowledge with particular reference to recent developments in nutritional sciences
use techniques that are used in modern research laboratories to develop a range of technical laboratory and research skills
understand the importance of exercise and the role of micronutrients and macronutrients in maintaining health and preventing lifestyle diseases
Career Pathways
Graduates typically undertake further study to specialise in a professional area, including dietetics, research, food science and technology, health promotion or teaching.?
Careers include:
Teaching and research within universities
Governmental and Regulatory Agencies
Food, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology industries
Nutritional biochemists may also work in fields related to public policy, health care, or product development and marketing in the food industry.
