The Foundation Studies in Medicine (FSM) program provides international students with a pathway into the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle. The FSM is a one-of-a-kind program in Australia that can be completed in two or three trimesters. Successful applicants receive a packaged offer for both FSM and the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program [JMP]).

Progression requirements for Year 1 entry into the JMP at the University of Newcastle (Callaghan campus):
Achieve an overall average score of 90 or higher across all 8 courses in the Foundation Studies in Medicine (FSM) Program;
Achieve an average score of 75 or higher in English for Academic Purposes and Introduction to Academic Communication; and
Pass the MSA (Multiple Skills Assessment) and, if held, the PQA (Personal Qualities Assessment), as part of the JMP Admissions process
FSM students are exempt from having to sit the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT)
Students who are not offered a place in the JMP will be considered for a place in an alternative degree of their choosing (and subject to a quota-ed place availability and achieving the required average score).
Residency Status
An applicant who is successful in gaining a place as a fee-paying international student in the Joint Medical Program at the University of Newcastle should be aware that it is a condition of continued enrolment in the program that their visa status at the census date in each semester remains that of an international student. Conversion to permanent resident status will result in the student losing their status as a fee-paying international student.
