Overview
Develop a deeper understanding of the social worlds, economies, cultures, patterns of thought and politics of people in their historical context with the Associate of Arts Degree in History. Our faculty will inspire you to see history as the exploration of real people and how they responded to the challenges and realities of their times.
Learn important life skills
During the program, you will develop and enhance your critical-thinking, writing, research and presentation skills, and your ability to communicate your ideas to different audiences. You will also hone your ability to construct historical arguments, evaluate and interpret historical evidence, analyze historical problems and participate in informed historical debate. Independently, and cooperatively, you will investigate the ways that history is created, preserved and disseminated through public memory and commemoration.
What is an Associate degree?
Associate degrees take two years to complete and concentrate on one area of study. If you plan your courses carefully with a university program in mind, you鈥檒l be able to transfer all 60 credits to university. In most cases, an associate degree will allow you to enter the third year of a four-year bachelor's degree program. To ensure your courses transfer, see the BC Transfer Guide.
The Associate of Arts Degree in History may also fulfil some of the lower-division prerequisites for a Bachelor of Arts degree in other related disciplines, as well as some of the prerequisites for teacher education programs.
Get paid, full-time work experience during your studies
Put your skills to work by joining the optional Co-operative Education Program, which alternates semesters of study with paid, full-time work in your field. You鈥檒l earn money while gaining experience, building your resume and getting an employer reference, all before you graduate. To participate in Co-op you need to plan two semesters in advance, so we strongly recommend contacting the Co-op Office at the start of your program.
