Overview
Take the first step to a career as a lawyer, politician, motivational speaker, writer and more with an Associate of Arts Degree in Philosophy.
What you'll learn
In this program, you鈥檒l study ancient philosophy, including the thoughts and teachings of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle; Asian philosophy, which introduces belief systems such as Taoism and Buddhism; and philosophy of love, law, mind, art and education. You鈥檒l also study ethics and learn about the connection between religion and philosophy, all while honing your critical-thinking skills. Courses also explore the influence of science on society, the problems with philosophy, and logical reasoning.
What is an Associate degree?
Associate degrees take two years to complete and concentrate on one area of study. If you plan your courses carefully with a university program in mind, you鈥檒l be able to transfer all 60 credits to university. In most cases, an associate degree will allow you to enter the third year of a four-year bachelor's degree program. To ensure your courses transfer, see the BC Transfer Guide.
Jump-start your third year with the Summer Institute
The Summer Institute for Continental Philosophy includes a third-year Philosophy course, PHIL 3380: Continental Philosophy, as well as a lecture from a guest speaker. If you are planning to complete a bachelor鈥檚 degree, the course may transfer as third-year credit to universities across B.C., including UBC and SFU. The Summer Institute is open to all post-secondary students with 9 credits in Philosophy or suitable equivalents.
