Objective: Through the doctoral programs, students of this major are supposed to be cultivated into high-quality and high-level talent who master the thorough and extensive basic theories as well as systematic and in-depth professional knowledge in Materials Science and Engineering, gain the capability to independently engage in scientific research, acquire good experimental skills and scientific literacy, and carry out innovations and practice in the emerging, interdisciplinary and new technology fields related to materials.

Career: There are many career options for doctoral students, working either for state-owned enterprises and government-sponsored institutions, foreign-funded enterprises, or for listed companies in China and Beijing. Doctoral students can work in widely different industries. They can be engaged in industrial planning, technology development, process and equipment design, cleaner production evaluation and consultation in the fields of eco-materials and environmental life-cycle assessment of materials, refractory metals, nanotechnology and functional materials, green joining new materials and technologies, advanced structural materials, photoelectric functional materials, and efficient energy materials. They also can be engaged in scientific research in national materials research e Ph.D. students of the IMPAM excel at scientific research practice, especially the characterization techniques using microscopy, researching on the relationship between microstructure and performance of advanced materials, R&D of new materials, new devices and new applications. Therefore, they are capable of various jobs and widely praised by the employers after graduation, including large-scale scientific research institutes such as Chinese Academy of Sciences, universities, large enterprises and government-sponsored institutions, international companies and internationally renowned universities in the role of post-doctorates to give full play to their professional skills.
