Research in the School Of Mechanical & Materials Engineering has always had a strong industry-focus and the school boasts the first ever UCD spin-out company, The Timoney Group.
The overall aim of the initiative is to attract graduates of the highest academic standards to participate in and expand School-based structured PhD programmes in UCD.

Energy
Clean energy is the biggest engineering challenge facing mankind today. We research areas such as Building Energy, Energy Storage, Emissions Control and Refrigeration.
Biomedical Engineering
Applying engineering techniques & devices to the human body has helped diversify our research into Artificial Hip Joints, Artery-Widening Stents & Head Impact Protection.
Materials & Manufacturing
We're engaged in Cutting Edge Research in areas such as Super Adhesives, Nano-Coatings, 3D Printing, Micro-fluidics and Zero-G (in space!) Metal Casting.

To be eligible to enter one of UCD鈥檚 PhD programmes, a candidate must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree. In some cases, a Master鈥檚 degree may also be required. In certain cases, a candidate may be able to provide other evidence to the School in order to satisfy the entry requirements of the programme.
IELTS: An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University:
A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +.
A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section
Cambridge Examinations
English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 176+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 169 in each skill and use of English)
Acceptable Examinations:
Proficiency Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2).
Advanced Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2)
First Certificate, Grade A (i.e. CEFR Level C1)
Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section.
