This program aims to produce graduates who have a thorough understanding (both academic and practical) of the Welsh language, its literature and culture, a high level of oral and written language skills, and highly developed employability and creative skills. relevant to modern Wales.
As we aim for the Welsh Government's target of one million Welsh speakers by 2050, graduates with such an understanding are more needed than ever. The ability to use Welsh at a professional level is also very attractive to employers, which means you have a unique opportunity to secure an interesting and varied career where you can influence the linguistic, cultural and economic future of contemporary Wales.
It is a three-year two-course course, one for students who have studied Welsh as a first language, and one for students who have studied Welsh as a second language. In the first year these cohorts are mostly taught separately before coming together for most modules during year two. In the final year, everyone is taught together.
A range of core and optional modules are offered to give you a grounding in the language and its literature, as well as the opportunity to specialize in areas of personal or vocational interest. In addition, you will have the opportunity to undertake work experience in the second year to develop your confidence and professional skills.
Learning and assessment
We offer a supportive learning environment, where you are enabled to gain a range of skills and a wealth of specialist knowledge. Our courses develop intellectual skills, such as critical thinking, in-depth analysis, evaluating evidence, making arguments, applying theory, and using language effectively in writing and discussion. You will gain experience in areas such as team working, independent research and time management.
You will be taught in lectures and seminars. Lectures provide an overview of key subject concepts and frameworks, preparing you for undertaking independent research for the seminars and developing your own ideas. Seminars give you the opportunity to research the ideas outlined in the lectures.
