American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language with unique grammar and syntax. ASL consists of body and facial expressions along with handshapes, movement, and location of signs.

Why ASL:

ASL is the third most used language in the United States. Students will also get to learn about the Deaf community and culture through class lessons and community interactions in Stillwater and other locations in Oklahoma.

Career paths

ASL would be a beneficial skill with degrees or careers that work directly with the Deaf community, clients, or have Deaf colleagues. Potential careers in a variety of fields include:

Sign Language Interpreter

Educator

Vocational Rehab Counselor

Interpreting Coordinator

Social Worker

Speech and Language Pathologist

Special Education Assistant

Highlights

ASL Students can choose an Interpreting focus in the degree, or the traditional B.A. path. Students will be trained in Deaf Culture, Poetry for ASL, Storytelling for ASL, Ethics in Interpreting, in addition to hands-on learning through the OSU Language Lab. ASL students also have access to the Mango app (ASL tips and training) for free! Students may also link up with the American Sign Language Club on campus.
