The six-year concurrent program culminates in the awarding of a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Boston University School of Medicine in addition to a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. This program, in which select individuals will be admitted to the Boston University School of Medicine as second-year medical students, combines didactic instruction and core clinical rotations/clerkships to provide comprehensive hybrid training in both the medical school and oral surgery components of the program. The addition of the MD component to the traditional four-year Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) program provides additional education, training, and credentials commensurate with the expanding range and complexity of the oral and maxillofacial surgical repertoire.
Graduates of this program will be well qualified to practice the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery in a private practice or academic setting. They will be eligible for certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Graduates also will be educationally qualified for state medical licensure within the US, and will be able to apply to fellowship programs that require an MD degree.

The international equivalent of the DMD dental degree and a passing result on the U.S. National Board Dental Examination Part 1 are prerequisites for consideration for admission to the Advanced Standing DMD Program for applicants whose dental degrees were conferred from accredited institutions outside the United States. An applicant must have earned the dental degree and hold a final diploma prior to applying to the Boston University program. Provisional degrees and certificates are not sufficient.
Minimum TOEFL score for the Advanced Standing DMD Program: 90 Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) total score; 550 Paper-based TOEFL.
Competitive applicants to the Advanced Standing DMD Program typically have an iBT TOEFL total score of 100 or higher.
