The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is a 60-semester hour master鈥檚 degree program of studies intended for students who seek licensure in Michigan as professional counselors and employment in community-based mental health centers, hospitals and other treatment centers, and private practice.

The following outline describes the general program requirements leading to a minimum of 60 hours of graduate study for those students seeking a master鈥檚 degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Basic Counseling Core: 33 hours
Satisfy this requirement by completing all of the following.

COUN 505 - Counselor Development: Basic Skills 3 hrs
COUN 508 - Theories of Counseling 3 hrs

COUN 530 - Career Development and Information Services 3 hrs
COUN 540 - Group Process I 3 hrs
COUN 571 - Cross-cultural Counseling 3 hrs
COUN 580 - Counselor Development: Counseling Process 3 hrs
COUN 622 - Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Counseling 3 hrs
CMH Counseling Specialization: 14 hours
Satisfy this requirement by completing all of the following.
COUN 574 - Couple and Family Counseling 3 hrs
COUN 575 - Substance Abuse Counseling I 3 hrs

Supervised Counseling Experience: 8 hours
Satisfy this requirement by completing eight hours from the following.

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission.
Applicants must also meet the following program requirements:
Evidence of academic aptitude for graduate-level study that includes at least one of the following:
A 2.75 overall undergraduate GPA, or a 3.0 GPA in the second half of the undergraduate degree program.
A graduate GPA of 3.3 on a previously completed advanced degree.
The GRE scores may not be more than five years old. The student must score at the 50 percentile or above to be accepted. The applicant must also meet the 2.7 minimum GPA required for graduate school admission.
