Led by faculty with broad and interdisciplinary research interests, graduate ocean engineering students can choose from a diverse group of courses in ocean related subjects, preparing them for jobs in large and small corporations, consulting firms, and government research laboratories.
Program requirements: a total of 42 credits beyond the M.S. degree (or 72 credits beyond the B.S. degree), composed of at least 18 credits of course work and 24 credits of dissertation research. Courses must include one in advanced applied mathematics, one in engineering or oceanography, and a minimum of two in ocean engineering. EGR 515 counts towards the minimum of two courses in ocean engineering requirement. Qualifying, written, and oral comprehensive examinations are required for all doctoral students. OCE 605 and 606 are required for all full-time students.

M.S. degree in engineering or equivalent; exceptional students with a Bachelor of Science in engineering will also be considered. All students will be required to complete courses equivalent to those for the M.S. degree in ocean engineering if not included in their master鈥檚 degree.

An overall score of 80 or above (82 for teaching assistantship consideration), AND Minimum scores in the following areas: Reading: 19; Writing: 18; Listening: 17; Speaking: 18 (the suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 20).

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): All scores must be sent directly to URI. Required minimum score of 6.5, AND minimum scores in the following areas: Reading: 6.5; Writing: 6.5; Listening: 6.5; Speaking: 6.5 (The suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 7).
Duolingo English Test: Required minimum score of 105 (Score of 110 for a teaching assistantship)
Pearson Test of English: Required minimum scores are Reading 53, Writing 59, Listening 47, and Speaking 47 (62 for international teaching assistants)
Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): Required minimum score of B2
